We were planning a major network upgrade of our ircd as we are using quite an outdated ircd version. The option was to stick with what we use (charybdis) and upgrade it to the newest or change to ShadowIRCd. It is unfortunate that shadowircd has now become two seperate ircd’s. “PonyIRCd” and “ShadowIRCd-ac”. While we probably entrust our network to use a ircd coded by anyone other than alphachat we just cannot simply run a network like ours on a ircd related to “ponies”. It has left us in a much awkward position as if it were to of remained ShadowIRCd we would of highly considered it for the few extra features it offers that charybdis doesn’t, but given the circumstances or there lack of our choice to remain with charybdis will remain and we will just upgrade it.
We have made it clear as some suggestions have been made about using unrealircd. We will never in the face of this planet use these ircd’s. While they can be seen as a good alternative we are a network that believes that oper privileges should remain access controlled through services and not just a ircd configuration file. It can also raise the concern that if our services get compromised opers will be powerless. This is not correct as we can simply remove services and restart them uncompromising to the network. It’s not a game of restricting opers to our degree of satisfaction but to ensure our users are aware and confident that our opers cannot go beyond the access they are allocated in our services.
